West Ham midfielder Jack Wilshere has revealed that he has had to change his game slightly ahead of the new season.

The central midfielder joined the Hammers on a free transfer this summer after his contract with his previous club Arsenal expired.

The 26-year-old playmaker has been plagued by injuries in his playing career, missing a total of 155 games through injury since his debut for the Gunners.

Wilshere has revealed that he has had to change how he tackles going into the new Premier League season.

“I have done everything that all the players have done, I have my own individual stuff in the gym but…my problem in the past going into every challenge fully committed, if it was 80-20 against me I’d still go for it,’ Wilshere told Gary Neville on the Premier League Launch show, as transcribed by Football London.

“If I have had to change anything it’s being smarter, picking my chances to go in to big challenges but at the same time I can’t stop it. I don’t think I can change, you know what its like in the game, you want to win the ball, you’re going to do it.”

OPINION

These are very smart comments from West Ham’s Jack Wilshere. At his previous club Arsenal, he was getting injured almost every time he had a run of games and it seemed like his body couldn’t cope with the physicality of playing games every single week. That was understood and Wilshere was given time at his previous club, after all, it was his boyhood club and he was one of the very best midfielders around. However, even their patience ran out eventually and now after the transfer to the Hammers, their patience will run out with the new signing if he can’t keep himself fit, so it’s imperative he does everything in his power to keep himself in the starting lineup. The 26-year-old remains a supremely talented midfielder and he can make a massive impact at the London Stadium, but he can only do that if his fitness matches his ability and that is the question mark that has been hanging over him.
