West Ham United defender Angelo Ogbonna has issued a stern warning to his team mates, saying the club needs to start delivering on its potential.

The centre back scored the team’s second goal in their 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night, and then issued a rallying cry to his fellow Hammers.

“It’s really important this competition [Carabao Cup] but I think we need to win at home,” he told Football London. “We need to win in the Premier League and that will be really important against Wolves.

“When we played last Saturday against Arsenal we did not deserve to lose. We did really, really well for one hour and were lacking at the end maybe when we conceded.

“I don’t want to talk about the future. The present is that we don’t have a point, we need points, that is the only thing.”

OPINION

Ogbonna is certainly right when he says that West Ham need points. Manuel Pellegrini’s side have suffered defeat in each of their three Premier League games so far this season, so it will have been a relief for the new manager to get off the mark against Wimbledon on Tuesday night. Ogbonna is also correct in saying that the Hammers played well against Arsenal. The performance against the Gunners was much improved from the capitulation at Liverpool and the slump against Bournemouth. However, they still lost, and as Ogbonna says points must be the priority for the club. They have the talent in the squad to have a good season, but for some reason it hasn’t happened yet. But with players like Marko Arnautovic and Felipe Anderson, there’s always hope. The new signings will take some time to settle in, but once everyone clicks in their new London Stadium surroundings, everything should be fine for West Ham.
