Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has urged West Ham United fans to be excited by two of the club’s new attacking signings – Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko – rather than Jack Wilshere.

During Sky Sports‘ live coverage of the match between Liverpool and the Hammers, the former Reds defender aimed a dig at new arrival Jack Wilshere, who arrived from Arsenal on a free transfer.

He said during the 4-0 thumping of West Ham: “I don’t think it’s as good a signing as people are saying. He’s still got to bring a lot more. If I was a West Ham fan, I’d be more excited about the wide players than Jack Wilshere.”

The 26-year-old was one of the Irons’ Premier League debutants yesterday afternoon, along with the likes of Lukasz Fabianski, Ryan Fredericks, Fabian Balbuena and Felipe Anderson.

OPINION

Carragher is right to aim this small dig at Jack Wilshere, as he was relatively quiet throughout the game. He did not make much of a contribution, and was mostly silenced by the overpowering Liverpool midfield that included Naby Keita. Even though he was one of Arsenal’s key figures in recent years, that does not instantly make him a player who is capable of lifting fans off their seats. If anything, that is the job of the new wingers, Anderson and Yarmolenko. Anderson still needs time to adjust and perhaps playing Liverpool in his first Premier League game was a particularly tough ask, and he will undoubtedly show the supporters why he is the club’s record signing during their next match against Bournemouth. As for Yarmolenko, we did not get to see much of him as he came on as a substitute in the second half, but he will soon show everybody what he can do over the course of the season.
