West Ham have seen an £18million bid for Lyon defender Marcelo rejected, according to the Daily Mail.

The national newspaper claim that the Hammers lodged the eight-figure offer for the 6ft 3in tall Brazilian centre-back (Transfermarkt) only for it to be deemed not good enough.

The Daily Mail report that the French side want an offer of more than £20million in order to sell Marcelo this summer even though they paid only £6million to sign him from Besiktas last July.

OPINION

As the Daily Mail’s report states following the injury to Winston Reid then the Hammers understandably want to recruit another centre-back before the transfer window slams shut. However they’re barking up the wrong tree by pursuing Marcelo who at the age of 31-year-old’s old would be a costly pursuit. With Lyon rejecting a very enticing offer of £18million for their player’s services from the Hammers, it’s clear Manuel Pellegrini has to quickly switch his attentions to pursuing another centre-back. Marcelo may have impressed many in the 49 appearances he made in the 2017/18 season for Lyon but there are other defenders for Pellegrini to consider. The Daily Mail claims that the Hammers are interested in Barcelona’s Yerry Mina and he would clearly be a better signing especially after his superb displays at the World Cup for Columbia. The 23-year-old would definitely be worth the club paying above £20million for as he would be long-term solution to the Hammers’ defensive worries due to his young age.
