Sir Trevor Brooking heaped praise on West Ham midfielder Jack Wilshere and shared that he was excited to have him at the club.

The Hammers legend shared that if he was the 26-year-old central midfielder then he would be aiming to prove to everyone next season that he is as good as everyone knows he can be.

Brooking claimed that if Wilshere was able to play to the best of his ability then it would be a big plus for the Hammers during their first season under Manuel Pellegrini.

“The player I’m quite excited about is Jack (Wilshere),” the Hammers icon told Sky Sports.

“He’s a talented player, a creative midfielder – West Ham need someone like that to see a pass.

“At 26 – for me the next 5 or 6 years were my best – you’ve got your confidence in your ability.

“And if I was him I’d want to prove to everyone that he can be as good as we know he can be and so for me his presence, if he plays well will be a big plus.”

OPINION

Brooking has high expectations for Wilshere in the upcoming season and hopefully the former Arsenal midfielder delivers the goods. The Hammers legend has effectively thrown down the gauntlet for the 26-year-old to make his mark next season and he does seem capable of doing that, if he stays fit. The English midfielder has battled constant injuries during his career and those have stopped him from fulfilling his potential. However last season Wilshere did manage to make 38 appearances for the Gunners and finally looked like the player everyone thought he would become when he first burst on to the scene as a teenager. The midfielder is one of the new Hammers recruits this summer and while he was picked up on a free transfer, there is still a lot expected of him. Upon joining the club Wilshere signed a three-year contract, as reported by Sky Sports, so hopefully he will be able to establish himself at the London Stadium for the foreseeable future.
