West Ham have suffered a blow in their transfer plans as midfielder Bruno Fernandes has elected to stay at Sporting CP.

West Ham United target Bruno Fernandes has decided to stay with his current club, according to A Bola. The Portuguese outlet has reported that the midfielder will remain at the Estadio Jose Alvalade this season.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side were interested in the midfielder’s signature and as reported by Sky Sports, the Hammers put in a bid of £20million to try and secure his signature, but it looks like they will now have to move on to other targets.

This will be a big blow to Manuel Pellegrini’s transfer plans this summer. The fact that they put in such a large bid in order to secure the signing is a measure of just how much he was wanted at The London Stadium.

Things don’t always out as club’s hope in the transfer market, but even still, West Ham will be gutted that he’s decided to stay where he is. He is a special talent and would have added so much quality to the centre of The Hammers midfield. He was a player who had all the skills you’d want from a midfielder, he can shoot, pass and dribble at a really high level.

Bruno Fernandes scored 16 goals and provided 20 assists in 56 appearances in all competitions last season, which are remarkable stats for a midfielder and proves why Pellegrini will be so disappointed to lose out on his signature (TransferMarkt).

The new boss needs players who can control games from midfield, playing passes that no-one else can see and deciding games with bits of quality. To get that, you need to pay a premium, and West Ham were prepared to do that.

Pellegrini must now move on quickly and focus his efforts on other targets. As the midfield area is so important for how the Chilean wants to play football, expect a lot more transfer movement in that area over the next few weeks, especially a creative and technically gifted type of player. These last few weeks could define Pellegrini’s season.
