West Ham United must beat Liverpool to the signing of Croatia defender Domagoj Vida.
As reported by Fanatik, Liverpool have had a £15.8million bid for Vida rejected by his current side Besiktas, with the Turkish side wanting £30.8million for the Croatian defender.
The Turkish outlet also reveals that West Ham United, Everton and Fulham are interested in the defender.
West Ham are in serious need of some defensive reinforcements ahead of the new Premier League season and the signing of Vida would make a big difference to the quality of their defensive unit.
As proven by his performances for his national team at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Croatian has been a rock at the heart of his team’s defence and has often looked a better player than his compatriot and Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren.
If there is an opportunity to steal a march on Liverpool in these transfer negotiations for the 29-year-old, The Hammers should give Besiktas what they want and secure his signing before the Merseyside club gets a sniff about what’s going on.
The Croat only joined the Turkish club in January, signing from Dynamo Kyiv on a free transfer. He made a total of 36 appearances for the two clubs last season, scoring three times (TransferMarkt).
With Manuel Pellegrini now in charge, the London club need to adjust their ambitions and aim higher than ever before. That means going after transfer targets that the major European clubs are interested in and fighting with them over really good players, of which Vida is one of them.
This is where Hammers fans will find out just how high their club’s ambitions are this season, if they pull out of potential deals because teams like Liverpool are interested then that would be disappointing.
The signing of Vida, and beating Liverpool to his signature, would show the club’s fans and Pellegrini that they mean business this season.
