West Ham are in the race to sign centre-back Harold Moukoudi from Ligue Two side Le Havre, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports on their website that the Hammers face competition to land the signature of the 6″3 (source: Transfermarkt) colossus, with Burnley already in the hunt for the French club’s £9 million-rated defender, having already made an enquiry.

The 20-year-old has made 40 appearances for the second tier side during the 2017/2018 campaign, netting four goals in the process. The youngster also made his debut for the France under-20 team with his first start coming this year, and has since gone on to have four caps for his country.

OPINION

It seems surprising that West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini is in the market for another centre-back, especially after the signings of Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena. The Hammers appear to be already fully equiped in that position, and it does not make sense why they are chasing somebody else in the same role. Centre-back Winston Reid is currently sidelined for three months with injury, and Pellegrini may be looking to provide reinforcements in his absence. Moukoudi is a very young defender and has only played in France’s second division, meaning he does not have much experience. If Pellegrini is chasing after another defender to add to his ever-growing squad, then he may need to look elsewhere, because Moukoudi potentially does not yet have what it takes to play for a Premier League team. He needs to gain more experience, possibly in Ligue One, to be even considered for a role in the Irons’ squad.
