Derby County have given midfielder Luke Thomas to fly home from their pre-season training camp in Tenerife to hold talks with West Ham United, according to Gloucestershire Live.

The regional newspaper report that the 19-year-old is set to return to England on Wednesday night ahead of talks with the Hammers, with the rest of the Rams squad not due back for another three days.

Gloucestershire Live claim that Thomas’ former club Cheltenham Town would be entitled to a percentage of any fee paid by the Irons for the midfielder.

Good move for West Ham United?

Yes.

Thomas was Derby County’s Young Player of the Year in 2017/18, making two senior appearances in the Championship in matches against QPR and Bolton.

While the 19-year-old is still short of first-team experience, it is obvious that he is making brilliant progress at Derby and is destined for a big future in the game.

West Ham would do well to snap him up before he fully breaks into first-team football, and now looks to be the time to do that with Thomas set for a big season under Frank Lampard at Pride Park.

Forever West Ham rating: 8/10

Likely to happen?

It looks like the Hammers are set for talks in the coming days with Thomas, and there looks to be little serious competition for his signature.

As long as the two sides can work out a fee and agree personal terms, there are seemingly few barriers to a deal going through very soon.
