West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang’s exit is edging ever closer as the club nears a £10million deal to sell him back to Sampdoria, according to Sky Sports.

The sports broadcaster reports on their website that the 6″1 (source: Transfermarkt) central enforcer is close to returning to the Serie A outfit, who he left in 2015 in order to make the move to the East London-based club.

Agreeing personal terms are not to be an issue when completing the deal for Obiang, who still has four years to run on his current Hammers’ contract. He was a regular starter in the team before Christmas, but only made one appearance from February.

OPINION

Moving to his former club Sampdoria is the best decision Obiang could have made for his career. He was not likely to get a look-in with new boss Manuel Pellegrini, who has made an array of signings which means he would have full even further behind in the pecking order. The Spaniard spent five years learning his trade for Sampdora in Italy, and his talent is only set to increase with regular game time. The fact he only made one appearance from February onwards was a sign that he was being ousted by the club back then, who evidently felt that he was not fit for the Premier League any longer. He will be hoping he can return to his form at Sampdoria sooner rather than later, which is a likely possibility when playing in an environment he is used to.
