Napoli are keen on signing West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna, according to the Daily Mirror.
The national newspaper state that Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti is ready to swoop for Chelsea defender David Luiz but also has the Hammers’ 6ft 2in tall (Transfermarkt) centre-back on his radar.
It was previously claimed by Hammers’ insider Claret and Hugh at the end of June that Ogbonna may be facing an exit from the London Stadium due to Manuel Pellegrini’s desire to recruit another new centre-back following the arrival of Issa Diop.
Ogbonna will no doubt tempted with a move to Napoli as the Serie A side are set to compete once again in the Champions League during the 2018/19 season. The Italian giants were unlucky not to get out the group stages of the competition in their 2017/18 season and it seems they’re recruiting new faces in order to help them do better. If the Hammers were to let Ogbonna go this summer then it would be a mistake. The 30-year-old defender was one of the few players who covered themselves in glory last season as he generally submitted good performances during the 38 appearances he made. The Hammers did have a terrible defensive record last season but Ogbonna isn’t one of the players who should be held directly accountable for that. The 30-year-old is dominate when it comes to aerial duels and it’s hard to see why the club would want to lose him this summer.
