West Ham have announced that both Winston Reid and Andy Carroll have suffered a setback in their recovery from injury.

The club announced in a statement on their official club website that both Reid and Carroll will be out for a minimum of three months each, in what is a massive blow for Manuel Pellegrini ahead of next season.

New Zealand international defender Reid has sustained a knee injury, while 29-year-old striker Carroll has an ankle issue that requires surgery.

In his time at The London Stadium, Carroll has sustained 11 different injury issues, which has led to him missing a total of 127 games (TransferMarkt).

OPINION

There comes a point where enough is enough. Andy Carroll is a magnificent talent on his day, he can score fantastic goals with his head or feet, has good close control and his physically imposing. However, ‘his day’ just doesn’t come often enough. The constant injuries mean that he can never quite get back to full fitness or maintain any sort of form. As soon as he has a few games in the side and is starting to look like his old self again, he breaks down and is out for another few months, then the cycle starts again. It’s a bit like the Daniel Sturridge issue that Liverpool are facing, how long do you stick with a player who is on massive wages but hardly actually contributes to the team. Having talent only gets footballers so far, they can’t show it on the pitch on a regular basis then what’s the point in having them in the squad?
