West Ham have edged closer to agreeing a deal with Swansea City for defender Alfie Mawson, according to the Daily Mirror.

The newspaper state that the Hammers are closing in on landing goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and hope to make it a double raid of the Swans by grabbing their 6ft 2in tall (Transfermarkt) centre-back as well.

The Daily Mirror report that once a deal is confirmed for the 33-year-old keeper the Hammers will focus their attention of capturing Mawson.

It is believed that the Hammers have conducted talks regarding signing the colossus centre-back and have edged closer to agreeing a fee in the region of £20million for his services.

OPINION

Once the Hammers agree a fee for Mawson it should be another deal done. The London club should have no problem giving him a tempting contract to sign as the defender currently only earns £25,000-a-week, as stated by Spotrac, at the Swans. Mawson should see a significant pay rise if he was to join the Hammers as that seems like a low amount for a regular Premier League starter. The only issue with this deal is that £20million does seem a lot to pay for Mawson but then the transfer market is filled with inflated prices. The 24-year-old no doubt has his fair share of admirers after impressing in his 44 appearances for the Swans last season and this no doubt allows his club to be able to demand such a fee. Manuel Pellegrini knew he had to address the Hammers’ defensive issues when arriving and if his double raid of the Swans is successful then he would have made significant progress before a ball has even been kicked.
