West Ham United have been set back in their bid to sign Paris Saint-Germain playmaker Javier Pastore after the 28-year-old’s wages were revealed, according to Claret and Hugh.

The Hammers news website report that the Argentina international is currently earning between £190,000 and £200,000-a-week, which is a wage packet the club simply cannot afford.

Claret and Hugh claim that despite PSG’s willingness to strike a cut-price deal around £20million, Pastore’s wages mean that an agreement with the Irons is unlikely to get off the ground.

Following the initial claims made by Sky Sports yesterday that the club had entered talks, this is a major development in the story as the Hammers look to build a squad capable of challenging for Europe next season.

Good move for West Ham?

Absolutely.

Pastore is a sublime player with pedigree rarely seen at the London Stadium, and he would most definitely go on to be a star at the London Stadium.

The prospect of Pastore and international teammate Manuel Lanzini roaming the attacking lines for the Hammers is a massively exciting one, and the club would turn into a serious threat in the Premier League next season.

The possibility of a cut-price deal makes this one even sweeter for the Hammers, who would be getting a world class operator for minimal outlay.

Likely to happen?

Unfortunately not.

As stated here, Pastore’s wages at PSG were always going to be prohibitive, and a deal to sign for West Ham was always going to be a long shot.

However, a move for a player of his quality is a good sign ahead of an important summer, and Hammers fans will hopefully see someone of similar ability walk through the doors in the coming weeks.
