West Ham hold a genuine interest in signing Toulouse centre-back Issa Diop but have not agreed a deal in principle as reported by Sky Sports, according to a club insider.

ExWHUemployee, who is an established source for reliable insider information, reported on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon that the club were indeed interested in a move for the 21-year-old.

Ex went on to claim however that the deal was not as far advanced as suggested by Sky Sports, who have reported that a £22million deal was agreed in principle on Wednesday.

It is also said that a deal for Swansea defender Alfie Mawson remains the most likely defensive incoming for the Hammers, but there is a chance that both players could be signed.

OPINION

When the Sky report came out it seemed that a deal had been agreed exceptionally quickly for Diop following reports of West Ham’s initial interest in the 21-year-old. That report seems however to have jumped the gun slightly, with ExWHUemployee remaining one of the most reliable insider sources in Premier League football right now. The positive note here is that West Ham’s interest in Diop is genuine, with a deal still remaining possible for the enforcer. It will be interesting to see how the club handle their simultaneous interest in Mawson, with Ex seemingly under the impression that the Swansea star is the more likely signing. The injury to Manuel Lanzini has meant a deal for two centre-backs is unlikely, but it is possible that the club will blow that speculation out of the water with this double arrival. The picture should become far clearer in the coming days and weeks.
