West Ham are in the running to sign West Brom defender Craig Dawson, according to the Daily Mirror.

The newspaper claimed in its live transfer blog (8:12am, Sunday 6 May) that the Hammers are eyeing the 28-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window.

It is understood that David Moyes’ side are joined by Burnley, Wolves and Celtic for the in-demand English defender.

The report details that Dawson is valued at £15million and has a host of suitors circling for his signature.

Good move for West Ham?

Dawson is currently battling relegation with West Brom this season, but has managed to stand out as one of their elite players.

He is a versatile ace that can be deployed at either right-back or centre-back, but West Ham should deploy him in the latter if he did move to the London Stadium.

The West Brom defender has a fierce no-nonsense approach that would make him a bit hit with supporters and is also extremely strong in the air.

West Ham have to make changes to their backline after a very shaky season in defence and Dawson would be a great option, but they should look to negotiate a lower fee than £15million if his side get relegated.

Likely to happen?

Dawson’s exit at West Brom is set to be impacted on what division they are playing in next year and it’s most likely going to be in the Championship.

West Ham will face stiff competition if they want to sign him, with interested parties Celtic and Burnley both able to offer European football next season.
