Phil Thompson has claimed that West Ham must keep David Moyes as their manager because the Scottish boss would bring stability to the club.

The Sky Sports pundit shared his view about keeping Moyes at the London Stadium when reviewing the Hammers’ season after the final game against Everton on Sunday.

“I think they (Hammers) will have learnt from this season,” said Thompson on Sky Sports’ website.

“Keeping David Moyes should be imperative to bringing stability back to club and avoiding another relegation battle.”

Moyes confirmed following his side’s 3-1 victory over the Toffees on Sunday that he was set for talks soon, as reported by the Evening Standard, to discuss whether he would stay on as manager.

The experienced manager also confirmed, as reported by the Telegraph, that as of midnight on Sunday he is no longer contracted to the Hammers.

While Moyes has done an admirable job steering the Hammers away from relegation this season, it’s time for the club to say thank you and goodbye.

It may sound harsh to get rid of someone after a job well done, but the Hammers need to move forward not look back.

Thompson claims keeping Moyes would bring stability, which there’s no denying, however he goes on to say that it will allow the club to avoid another relegation battle.

The Hammers should be aiming much higher than just staying in the Premier League, given their squad, promising academy and the cash they could potentially spend in the transfer window.

Moyes would keep the London-based club in the Premier League, that’s practically a guarantee, yet his boring style of football and the way he sets up his teams won’t shoot the Hammers up the league where they need to be.

It’s better to bring in a manager capable of playing the way supporters want to see now, who is also capable of helping the club progress, and allow him the summer to settle in.

Then once the right figure is sat in the Hammers dugout, it will be time for the club to keep the faith and bring stability back to the hotseat at the London Stadium.

Therefore while Thompson is right to urge for stability at the club, he is barking up the wrong tree to suggest that Moyes is the person needed to achieve it.
