West Ham are planning to appoint their next manager by next Wednesday, according to Claret & Hugh.

The reliable Hammers site claims that the club want to name David Moyes’ successor by 23 May and have set themselves that date as a deadline.

It is understood they have narrowed it down to a two-man shortlist of Paris Saint-Germain’s Unai Emery or Newcastle United’s Rafael Benitez.

The report details that Manuel Pellegrini and Marco Silva are now considered long shots, while Paulo Fonseca has reportedly ruled himself out of the running for the vacant position at the London Stadium after a meeting with co-owner David Sullivan.

OPINION

West Ham are looking to move swiftly to appoint their next manager and that is exactly the right thing to do to allow an entire summer of planning. There has to be a decent overhaul of the squad if the club are to match their ambitions in the coming years and try to bring European football to the London Stadium on a regular basis. The Hammers do have some talented individuals in their squad, but they need a new man at the helm to help refine their talents and also add some extra quality. Both Benitez and Emery are highly experienced managers that have played at the top level, something that will thrill supporters if they can replicate the past at West Ham. It seems like Emery would be the more likely candidate with his time at PSG coming to an end this summer, but Benitez’s frustration at the lack of ambition at Newcastle is well documented and he may receive the transfer chest he desires at West Ham.
