West Ham are interested in appointing Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez as their next manager, according to the Daily Mirror.

The newspaper claims that David Moyes is expected to leave the Hammers and that they have turned their attention to St James’ Park.

It is understood they are reigning their interest in Benitez after lining him up a couple of years ago.

The report details that the 58-year-old is currently trying to get more financial backing and transfer clout at Newcastle, while West Ham are prepared to support their new manager with “substantial transfer funds” in the summer and would grant his desire to spend in the window.

OPINION

West Ham’s search for a new manager is set to heat up in the coming days, as it appears that Moyes on his way out of the London Stadium exit doors. The club’s supporters will be keen to make a swift appointment and it will be interesting to see what they would make of Benitez’s potential arrival. He is a highly experienced manager that has worked wonders with Newcastle and helped them to a 10th-placed finish in the Premier League this season. Benitez certainly has shown he can handle top-level pedigree, managing at the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea and Liverpool in the past. West Ham should be delighted if they manage to prize Benitez away from his current club, but he is currently in talks with Newcastle about trying to secure funds for next season. The Hammers could give him the perfect platform to take a club forward and the board are right to inject cash this summer, with the squad short of a few superstars.
