West Ham could follow up the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini with the blockbuster signing of Yaya Toure, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper claim Pellegrini, 64, is expected to arrive at the east London club today (Monday) to sign a deal to become their new manager after deciding to quit Chinese Super League side Hebei China Fortune last week.

The Telegraph report that the 64-year-old’s arrival raises the likelihood of West Ham signing Premier League great Toure, who is a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Manchester City next month.

OPINION

Toure would be a blockbuster signing for West Ham. A true Premier League great with a CV that glitters with trophies, brilliant goals and powerhouse performances. Is he past his best? Yes. Can he still cut it at the top level? Certainly, at least for another season or two. Toure has spent the past two seasons slipping down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium, where statistics site Spotrac report his contract was worth £220,000-a-week. But there is no shame in being a fringe player in Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering side, especially when you have blown out 35 candles on your birthday cake, as the Ivory Coast international did earlier this month. Toure is said to have a good working relationship with Manuel Pellegrini, and played some of the best football of his career during the Chilean’s spell in charge of City. He may not be a box-to-box midfielder, but his touch, brain, outstanding passing range and ball-striking is on a different level to any West Ham midfielder. His time would need to be rationed, but Toure could make a huge impact at the London Stadium.
