West Ham have axed four of their backroom team days after Manuel Pellegrini took over as manager, it has been confirmed.

Goalkeeping coach Chris Woods, doctor Ian Beasley, medical chief Gary Lewin and fitness coach Nick Davies have all been given their marching orders.

Pellegrini has wasted no time clearing the decks after signing a three-year deal to succeed David Moyes in charge.

“West Ham United can today confirm a number of departures from the first team coaching and medical departments,” a club spokesperson said, as quoted by the Sun.

“Goalkeeping Coach Chris Woods, Head of Medical Services Gary Lewin, Club Doctor Ian Beasley and Head of Fitness Nick Davies have all left the Club with immediate effect.”

Yesterday, West Ham fans said their goodbyes on social media to James Collins, the most high profile of the five players released by the club. The club have now confirmed the exits of four members of their coaching and medical team. Reshaping backroom teams is a fact of life when there are managerial changes, despite the disruption this causes at clubs who frequently change managers. Like most coaches, Pellegrini is keen to have his tried and trusted allies in place. Nevertheless, the exits of former England and Arsenal physio Lewin, and ex-England goalkeeper Woods, are something of a surprise, given their standing in the game and association with the club. Woods has been at West Ham since 2015, working under Pellegrini’s predecessors Slaven Bilic and Moyes following earlier coaching spells at Everton and Manchester United. There will be disappointment among some Hammers that he is deemed surplus to requirements.
