Manuel Pellegrini will make it easier for West Ham to attract new signings this summer, according to a journalist who knows him well.

Spain-based Graham Hunter, who covered Villarreal when Pellegrini was the club’s manager, told the Hammers’ website that the new manager “offers a shortcut to players and agents across Europe”.

Hunter explained that players will be extra-keen to join West Ham given the 64-year-old’s pedigree, language skills and credentials as a top-level manager.

OPINION

Pellegrini does not have the reputation of Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp. Or Jose Mourinho. Or Mauricio Pochettino. They are managers who can swing a 50/50 deal their club’s way through their track record and charisma. Probably a 5/95 deal in Klopp’s case. But Pellegrini also has genuine clout. The former Manchester City manager has won titles in three countries and had great success in more, often while managing sides with far smaller budgets than their rivals. He is a skilful man-manager who players admire and want to play for. This is key when it comes to nailing down agreements with top players who have several clubs trying to sign them. Pellegrini is renowned for his taste for attractive football and for managing sides who play on the front foot. He also speaks multiple languages and can communicate well in several more. David Moyes, he is not. Whatever West Ham’s budget this summer, the presence of Pellegrini will give them an added advantage with some targets.
