West Ham captain Mark Noble has thrown down the gauntlet ahead of the summer transfer window, calling on the club to make three or four quality signings after sorting out the future of manager David Moyes.

The Hammers secured their Premier League safety last weekend with a 2-0 win over Leicester which they followed up with a 0-0 draw against Manchester United on Thursday night.

After their final game of the season against Everton this weekend attention will turn to the future of Moyes, which is up in the air at the moment, and Noble has now called on that to be sorted before moving for several transfer targets this summer.

As quoted by the Evening Standard, he said: “I think we do need to spend money in the summer. We have a good core of players but we need another three or four more good ones.

“We also need to know what’s happening with the manager. He came into a really difficult job. His appointment was questioned by many fans — but he’s done the job. It’s not nice when you’re in limbo, not just the gaffer but all of his staff and the players.”

OPINION

Noble is merely saying what every West Ham fan is thinking, in terms of signings anyway. The Hammers need to bring in at least three or four players this summer if they want to avoid a similar season next time round. Additions need to be made in defence, midfield and attack, and there are also several players that will need to be shipped out, meaning they will also need replacing. It is a big job at hand, but one that can be achieved with the right leadership. On that subject, Noble seems to be positive about the prospect of keeping Moyes on as boss. While it is encouraging to hear a player speak highly of his manager, this is not the decision that many fans would take. The Scot is highly unpopular on the terraces at the London Stadium, and there are many who would prefer an alternative option in place by the time August rolls around.
