David Moyes was offered a new contract by West Ham four weeks ago but snubbed it as he wanted to wait until the end of the season before committing, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim Hammers co-owner David Gold and managing director Karren Brady were in favour of the Scot remaining as manager beyond his initial short-term deal that expired in June.

The Sun report a contract was offered to Moyes after he steered the club clear of relegation but he chose to wait and paid the price as he was axed last week.

OPINION

Time waits for no man, and it appeared that West Ham’s top brass were unwilling to hang around while Moyes tried to leverage a better deal for himself, or attempt to take greater control over transfers and recruitment. It appears that the vote that carries most weight on the board of the east London club is co-owner David Sullivan, the man who is the real driving force behind the scenes. Moyes might have been the best option a month ago – in Sullivan’s eyes – but things change quickly in football and one or two iffy results or performances here of there change things. The former Everton and Manchester United manager has paid the price for his reluctance to commit, although it represents a major shock that he was offered a new deal only for it then to be subsequently withdrawn. It demonstrates the ruthlessness of Sullivan and company, and also suggests a board that is not signing from the same hymn sheet.
