Enzo Maresca has agreed to quit the Sevilla coaching staff to join Manuel Pellegrini at West Ham, according to Sky Sports Italy.

The Italian broadcaster claim Maresca, 38, is heading to London to link up with the Chilean, who was appointed on a three-year contract today.

Sky Sports Italy claim the Italian former midfielder will link up with Pellegrini after working for the 64-year-old when he was in charge at Malaga in 2011-12.

OPINION

Like most managers, Pellegrini will want to make his mark through the composition of his backroom staff. Trusted allies in the dugout and at the training ground are regarded as crucial for managers keen to implement their ideas and improve the players at their disposal. Maresca is something of a left-field choice, given that he has not worked on Pellegrini’s coaching staff before. However, unlike the Chilean and his long-standing number two, Argentine Ruben Cousillas, Maresca is in his 30s and more likely to be able to speak the language of the players. He has extensive top-level playing experience, including a spell in English football at West Brom, and has been on the coaching staff at Sevilla, the club where he had the most successful spell of his playing career. He will also be a different voice to Pellegrini and Cousillas, who have worked together for 20 years and will be so well attuned to one another’s way of thinking.
