West Ham are set for a major recruitment drive in the summer as David Moyes looks to bolster his ranks in east London but the Hammers could save a significant amount in the transfer market due to Declan Rice.

The 19-year-old defender has been thrust into the first-team frame this season following injuries to the likes of James Collins and Winston Reid, catching the eye with his performances for the relegation threatened outfit.

As such, speculation has long been rife to suggest that West Ham want to extend the contract of the Republic of Ireland international, handing him a huge new deal, and a source has confirmed to Claret & Hugh that the club are preparing to reward the teenager.

“Of course there are finances to be talked about but that’s not the major issue with Dec. He loves it at West Ham and he is far more interested in playing football at the highest level than going elsewhere on more money and not getting near the first team. Money is not his motivation.”

It’s stated that Rice, currently on £2.5k-a-week, will negotiate a new deal on a basic salary of £20k-a-week, potentially doubling that figure with appearance clauses- and planning a review of the wage package when he makes between 30-40 appearances.

First-team regulars Aaron Cresswell and Michail Antonio were rewarded in similar circumstances, paving the way for Rice to establish himself for the long-term.
