West Ham have seen a number of reasons to be optimistic this season despite a difficult campaign, with one major stand-out from the season being the rise of young defender Declan Rice.

The 19-year-old has been trust into the first-team frame following a number of defensive injuries to David Moyes’ side but has caught the eye with his performances, earning himself a senior appearance with the Republic of Ireland.

West Ham are now preparing a new contract for the teenager, issuing a significant pay rise, but the young defender has revealed that his ambitions outweigh the Hammers- as he wants to emulate his hero John Terry and win the Premier League.

Speaking to dt38.co.uk, the youngster said:

“My ambition is to win the Premier League title. As a kid watching so many games and seeing so many teams lift it, it gives me a buzz to go on and try to win the title.”

“Growing up I used to watch videos of him (John Terry) all the time. Every time I had a match I would try and play exactly as he did. He’s a great idol to look up to for any young centre-back.”

Given West Ham’s struggles to avoid the drop, it’s highly unlikely that the success Rice is eyeing will come at the London Stadium and his comments may put other Premier League sidess on alert.
