West Ham have plenty to do this summer and one of the big tasks ahead of David Moyes is improving a defensive line that has struggled this season.

The imminent departure of James Collins upon the expiration of his contract raises the need for West Ham to sign a new centre-half further and a host of names have already been linked as potential targets for the Hammers.

One of those from within the Premier League is Newcastle United skipper Jamaal Lascelles, also a reported target for Chelsea, but Magpies boss Rafael Benitez has played down the chances of the England hopeful leaving St. James’ Park.

Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s clash with Arsenal on Sunday, the Spaniard said:

“You can’t stop speculation about players, but I was talking with him for a while last week and the focus is just trying to improve his game. I think at the moment he knows he has to continue progressing and learning, but he is quite happy here.”
Lascelles is trying to force his way into England’s World Cup squad and any transfer this summer may hinge on whether a move can improve his chances of becoming a regular in Gareth Southgate’s side.
