West Ham will continue their quest to improve their midfield ranks during the summer transfer window, after failing to address their problem permanently during the January market.

The Hammers landed Joao Mario on-loan from Inter Milan but it’s now reported that the Portuguese international is a not being considered as a potential permanent recruit, with David Moyes’ side looking elsewhere.

Unfortunately for West Ham, the targets they’re identifying seem to be widely popular as The Mirror now report that the Hammers are facing a four-way battle in the chase to land FC Basel midfielder Mohamed Elyounoussi.

The Norwegian international was reportedly scouted by the Hammers during Basel’s 2-1 Champions League win against Manchester City last week, where representatives from Arsenal, Southampton and Leicester City were also in attendance, according to ESPN.

That interest could drive the fee for Elyounoussi’s services up significantly and the threat of Arsenal in particular, who have shown their financial strength in recent windows, is deeply concerning.
