West Ham boss David Moyes has made it clear he wants to sign a new midfielder this month, with his preference being players with Premier League experience.

The Hammers have been linked with a host of names during the January transfer window but one that keeps on surfacing is Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey.

25-year-old Shelvey has impressed on Tyneside but has struggled to establish himself as a crucial part of Rafael Benitez’s side in the Premier League this season, leading to questions as to whether the Magpies would accept a sale.

However, it seems that West Ham’s chances of landing the England international this week are minimal as The Chronicle reiterates that Benitez does not want to approve any departure that directly strengthens a Premier League rival.

Newcastle, like the Hammers, are fighting to retain their Premier League status in what is one of the most fiercest relegation battles in memory, with as many as ten sides holding concerns about their position in the top-flight.
