West Ham defender Jose Fonte has hit back at club co-owner David Sullivan after he revealed his children previously urged him not to sign the Portugal international.

Fonte joined the Hammers back in January in an £8 million deal from Southampton, but has since failed to replicate the form he showed at St Mary’s in East London.

Speaking in an interview with the Guardian before Saturday’s game against Chelsea, David Sullivan made the claim that he was not involved in the transfer of Fonte and Robert Snodgrass earlier in the New Year and that his kids “begged me not to sign them.”

Fonte has now hit back however, saying:  “It’s ignorance. I’m not going to say anything.

“It’s not going to change who I am, it’s not going to change what I do.

“I’m going to keep being the good professional that I am. I am going to keep working hard to try and help my team-mates and the manager.

“What has been said has no effect on me or who I am.”
