West Ham defender Jose Fonte should be back for first team action just after the New Year, according to O Jogo.

The Portuguese international has undergone surgery on an ankle injury, and O Jogo shared pictures of his foot after his successful operation. At the weekend, the 33 year old commented on his injury setback on Instagram, saying the news that he would be out for three months was hard to take:

“Difficult to digest…but with my mind already focused on a quick recovery!!! I will be back stronger in 2 or 3 months. I look forward to the grind!!!”

Fonte has been a regular for the Hammers this season, having started eight of the club’s eleven league games. He will miss some crucial matches including games against Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham in December.

The centre back has not had the best of times at the London Stadium since his arrival from Southampton for £8m back in January, and it will be interesting to see how new manager David Moyes rates him when he returns to first team duties next year.
