West Ham striker Toni Martinez put in another impressive display for the under 23 side yesterday as they beat Bristol Rovers in a surprise win in the Checkatrade Trophy.
The youth side beat the League One outfit 3-1 and now sit top of their group with two wins after the first two group games. It follows their 3-2 win against Swindon Town in their first match of the competition back in August.
Martinez has been in great form playing for the Under 23s in Premier League 2 with eight goals in nine games played. The 20 year old started last night’s Checkatrade Trophy tie and he helped himself to a brace against Rovers.
The Spaniard is certainly knocking on Slaven Bilic’s door for some first team action. Many fans were perplexed when the forward was not included in the squad for last week’s Carabao Cup tie against Tottenham, and the forward’s latest exploits for the Under 23s have led to more calls from Hammers supporters on Twitter for Martinez to be given first team chances:
Surely @AntonioMtnez_29 has to be called up to the first team soon?? #WHUFC

Bilic won’t use him he’d rather use no goals scored Carroll arnautovic

I love the way people are saying he should play based on nothing more than goals scored in a very poor under 23 league. Needs to go on loan

Dont think Bilic will do it
