Hammers defender Jose Fonte faces a number of months on the sidelines following an ankle injury, however is already looking ahead to his return.

The Portuguese star underwent surgery on his ankle earlier this week and is expected to spend as many as six-to-eight weeks out.

Fonte missed last weekend’s defeat to Liverpool after sustaining the injury in the previous week at Crystal Palace, however despite being set for a long time away from action, the Portugal international is still remaining positive.

“Now I’ve had the surgery, I will have to wear a cast for two weeks, then a boot for two weeks and finally a brace for two weeks, so that’s six weeks. Then after that it’s getting back my fitness levels,” the Portuguese told the club’s website.

“I‘m not scared of working hard, so I’ll put the hard work in. We have great physios and great doctors at the club, so we’ll be working hard together to be back stronger and fresher.”

New manager David Moyes is likely to search for new additions to his defence after the New Year with a number of his key players out injured.
