William Carvalho will have his release clause increased to £54m if he signs a new contract to stay at Sporting Lisbon, according to the Sun. His current buyout fee is reportedly £40m.

West Ham were involved in protracted negotiations to sign the midfielder in the summer, but the move broke down after recriminations on both sides for how the talks were handled.

While Sporting disputed whether the Hammers actually made an official bid for the Portuguese international, West Ham insisted they had and even threatened Sporting with legal action over the move after comments by one of their directors about David Sullivan.

Carvalho has remained silent throughout the affair, and it seems he could now extend his stay with the Primeira Liga outfit. The Sun are reporting that the 25 year old will be given a substantial wage increase, with his deal being extended until 2021. The holding midfielder’s current deal with Sporting ends in 2020.
