The reason by Serie A star Francesco Vicari’s failed summer move to West Ham has come to light, with the Daily Star revealing that the Hammers had failed to lodge an official bid for the defender.

The highly rated SPAL centre half was subject to heavy interest from the Hammers in the summer, however despite the Italian being ‘flattered’ by interest from the East London club, no official approach was made and hence a deal never materialised.

Slaven Bilic is understood to have enquired tentatively with regards to Vicari’s availability, but was told by the Italian club they would not part ways with the defender.

The West Ham boss was keen to bolster his defensive options ahead of the new season, however having failed to do so, has paid the price with a poor start to the season at the back in which is side have conceded 13 goals in 7 games, the second most in the Premier League this campaign.

Vicari signed for SPAL at the beginning of the 2016/17 season after spending the previous four years at Novara.

He has been capped at under-20 and under-21 level for his country.
