Monaco are planning a January bid for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, according to Sky Sports (via Transfermarketweb).

The Portuguese international was the centre of a fierce argument between West Ham and his club in the summer when a Sporting director accused the Hammers of failing to make a formal bid for the player. This was disputed by West Ham who claimed that Sporting kept changing their demands for the midfielder.

Carvalho eventually remained in Portugal when the summer transfer window closed, and there was talk that the player could be offered a lucrative new contract with an increased buyout clause.

It seems however that Monaco will look to steal a march on their rivals to sign the 25 year old. The Ligue One side are said to be lining up the midfielder to replace Fabinho who looks destined to depart the French League champions with Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Juventus all said to be tracking the Brazilian.
