West Ham defender Jose Fonte has urged his side to show ‘intensity, desire and passion’ ahead of the weekend’s clash against Swansea City.

The Hammers welcome the Swans to the London Stadium for their second consecutive home game, however will be hoping to fare better than they did this weekend against London rivals Tottenham.

Slaven Bilic’s side came out 3-2 losers in what was a tense affair against Mauricio Pochettino’s side. The home side went 3-0 down before clawing back to 3-2, and Fonte has stated the importance of starting well this weekend to ensure the Hammers don’t give Swansea the same advantage.

“Our last game was a disappointing result,” said Fonte via whufc.com. “We obviously wanted to give the fans the bragging rights of the derby, so we’re not happy we didn’t do that, but we put our hearts in the game, we were aggressive and we wanted to win.

“We’re not happy with the result, but we tried to fight back and we nearly did it, so there is no feeling of moral victory, but it’s important to know that it’s a long season and this game is gone and if we can get the three points today, we go into the international break with a positive feeling.”

The Hammers have had a disappointing start to the new campaign, winning only one of their six top flight games so far.

That solitary three points came against Huddersfield Town at the London Stadium nearly three weeks ago, and Fonte, a Portgual international, is hoping he and his team-mates can replicate that performance this weekend.

“Swansea is a team which plays with three centre-backs, so we expect a tough game, like every game in the Premier League is, but if we bring the same intensity, desire and passion that we brought against Huddersfield, that will give us a great opportunity to win the game.”
