Jose Fonte has labelled his side’s clean sheet against Huddersfield Town on Monday night ‘massive’ and insists the Hammers can make the London Stadium a fortress this season.

West Ham beat David Wagner’s side 2-0 thanks to goals from Pedro Obiang and Andre Ayew to secure their first win of the Premier League season and lift themselves off the bottom of the table.

The clean sheet was also the Hammers first of the new campaign, with Slaven Bilic’s defence until Monday unable to keep the ball out of their own net in all competitions. Jose Fonte, who joined the Hammers back in January, has praised his team-mates for the display.

“A clean sheet was massive,” Fonte confirmed speaking on whufc.com. “As a defender, it’s the worst possible feeling conceding three or four goals every game. It’s unbelievable.

“We managed to keep a clean sheet, we felt safe and secure with the system we played. It worked well when we used this system last year and, in this game, the manager reverted to last year and it was very successful.

“We’re really buzzing and happy with the result. Of course, it’s an important win after a few difficult weeks. Obviously, it’s three points and nothing more than that, but three points that will give us a little but more confidence.”

The Hammers next travel to West Brom in the Premier League, before back-to-back home games against Tottenham Hotspur and Swansea – both of whom they beat at the London Stadium at the back end of last season.

“We are pleased with the win because it shows we have a great squad and now we can keep going and picking up points after points.”
