West Ham are set to make a January move for Italian defender Francesco Vicari as Slaven Bilic looks to reinforce his back line.

Hammers scouts have been eyeing up the 23-year-old SPAL centre half, and have been impressed enough to potentially make a swoop for the Serie A star as soon as this winter, reports Calciomercato.

Slaven Bilic’s side have the current joint worst defensive record in the top flight this season having conceded a dismal 13 times in 6 Premier League games, leading to Bilic wanting to re-evaluate his options at the campaigns mid-way mark.

Vicari, who helped SPAL to promotion to Italy’s top flight for the first time in 49 years last year, has been touted as a man who could help the club solve their defensive woes.

A former Italy U-21 and a product of Roma’s youth academy, Vicari is now turning heads in his home country such has been his impressive start to life in Serie A.

West Ham scouts were allegedly present to watch the defender’s side during their 2-0 loss to AC Milan at the San Siro last week.
