Former West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has heaped praise on ‘influential’ Andy Carroll following the Hammers 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town last night.

Slaven Bilic’s side secured their first victory of the new Premier League season at the London Stadium thanks to goals from Pedro Obiang and Andre Ayew.

Allardyce, who was on hand in the Sky Sports studio for Monday Night Football, thinks Andy Carroll had a huge impact on the game and was a key reason as to why his former club came out on top on the night.

“Oh, I think so.” he answered when asked if Carroll’s inclusion in the starting line-up had been justified. “I think that right from the very start for me, massive influence on the game, continued to keep the pressure on Huddersfield particularly throughout the first half.”

Returning from injury, Carroll lasted 81 minutes despite not playing since April, much to the delight of the West Ham fans who gave the striker a standing ovation upon leaving the field.

Allardyce has twice managed Carroll, first at Newcastle and secondly at West Ham.
