West Ham have made a club record bid of £27.1 million for Portugal and Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, says The Telegraph.

Carvalho has long been linked with a move away from the Liga NOS side, more often than not with Arsenal, however it is now the Hammers who are favourites to land the sought after midfielder following their surprise bid.

Representatives from the London club are reportedly in Portugal to try and complete the deal for Carvalho, with Sporting Lisbon looking more likely to settle for a lesser than than their £36.1 million valuation of the player with him keen to move to the Premier League.

Should the 25-year-old join the Hammers, he would become the club’s sixth signing in what has been a busy summer for them, having completed deals already for Pablo Zabaleta, Joe Hart, Marko Arnautovic, Javier Hernandez and most recently Montenegro wonderkid Sead Haksabanovic.

Carvalho was part of the Portugal side that won Euro 2016, playing the full 120 minutes of the final against hosts France.
