West Ham full-back Arthur Masuaku has said the Hammers must improve ahead of this Sunday’s Premier League opener against Manchester United and need to cut out mistakes to avoid putting themselves ‘in trouble’.

Masuaku was involved in a mix-up with fellow defender Angelo Ogbonna last week in the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in Iceland, with an error in communication between the pair leading the the Citizen’s opening goal.

Speaking after the game, the Frenchman shared his frustration at such mistakes: “If you do mistakes against these kind of teams, you will directly get punished,” Masuaku said.

“We have to avoid this kind of stuff, especially like for the first goal, which was a misunderstanding. We have to cut this out, otherwise next week against Man United, we will put ourselves in trouble.”

The Hammers face City’s rivals Manchester United on Sunday in the club’s opening fixture of the new Premier League season, and will face a much improved United squad with Jose Mourinho have made a number of new additions including Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic.

“We have to be positive, like we said in the dressing room after the game. We still have to improve because the main event is going to start next week.”
