Sunderland have joined the race to sign out-of-favour West Ham midfielder Robert Snodgrass after The Scot was told he was free to leave the London Stadium this summer, reports the Northern Echo.

Signed by the Hammers from Hull City for £10 million only this January, Snodgrass has failed to replicate the form that he showed at his former club that warranted his double figure move, failing to find the net in 15 appearances since the switch.

After completing the signings of Marko Arnautovic, Sead Haksabanovic and with Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho expected to join the club in the coming days, the Scotland international now finds himself surplus to requirements in East London.

Aston Villa have been heavy favourites to land Snodgrass after Steve Bruce admitted he was working on a deal for his former player, however they will now have to compete with Sunderland for the 29-year-old’s services.

The Black Cats interest in the midfielder comes at the same time as West Ham have expressed interest in a star of their own, Didier Ndong, whom the Hammers will reportedly turn to if they fail to sign William Carvalho before the end of the week.
