West Ham suffered their second Premier League defeat in the space of a week as Slaven Bilic’s side lost to Southampton on Saturday in a thrilling 3-2 clash.
The Saints dominated the early stages and were rewarded with the opening goal through Manolo Gabbiadini after just 11 minutes.
Things went from bad to worse for the Hammers when Marko Arnautovic saw red for an elbow on Jack Stephens just past the half hour mark, before Dusan Tadic doubled the hosts advantage five minutes later.
A ten-man West Ham were resurgent however as summer signing Javier Hernandez bagged a brace to level the score and set Bilic’s side on course for their first point of the new season.
It wasn’t to be however, as a second penalty – conceded by another of the new boys Pablo Zabaleta for a clumsy challenge on Maya Yoshida – in injury time was converted by Charlie Austin to seal all three points for the Saints.
