Pedro Obiang has thanked the West Ham fans for their unbelievable support in the opening weeks of the new season.

The Hammers picked up their first victory of the campaign last night, beating League Two side Cheltenham Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup thanks to goals from Diafra Sakho and Andre Ayew, and Obiang believes the support of the fans have helped them through a difficult first few weeks.

“I think we have to give a mention for them because in the last two games they have given everything and they came here and did it again,” said the former Sampdoria star speaking on whufc.com.

“It is far to Cheltenham and now I know this place! I think we were a little unlucky because we are playing away when playing at home is better, but their support means it’s OK.”

The Hammers will now host Bolton Wanderers in the third round on the week beginning September 18th, however will first travel to St James’ Park this weekend before facing of against Huddersfield and West Brom in the weeks that follow as Slaven Bilic’s side look to carry their victory in the Carabao Cup through to the Premier League.

“If you start to win the games, we can change the mentality, so Wednesday’s game was important because it means we can go to Newcastle with a different mentality.

“It’s important for the strikers to score because if they score they have more confidence for the league. It’s beautiful if we can score too, but it’s more important if they can score.”
