West Ham legend Tony Cottee says he hopes that new signing Javier Hernandez can break his long standing Hammers record.

Cottee was the last player to hit over 20 goals in one season for the club, a record which still stands since he scored an impressive 22 times during the 1986-87 campaign.

The former Hammers striker has said he won’t be disappointed if his club record was to be broken by the £16 million Mexico star.

Speaking on whufc.com, Cottee said when asked about his 30-year-old West Ham record: “It has been a long time! On one hand, it’s obviously nice to still hold a record at the Club but, as a West Ham fan, I’m quite sad that no one has managed to beat it since 1987!

“I am really excited by the signing of Javier, though, and I genuinely believe that he is the type of proven goalscorer who can score 20 goals a season for us next season.”

Cottee scored 146 times in 336 appearances during his two spells with the club, and he believes Hernandez’s goals can help Slaven Bilic’s side can push further up the Premier League table and further towards the European places.

“If we do have a striker reaching that figure, then you are looking at the team pushing up a lot higher in the table than we have been in recent seasons.

“So I would love to see Chicharito score 20 goals because it would most likely mean a successful season for West Ham.”
