West Ham United cult icon and former England international is training with League One side Southend United following his release from Indonesian club Persib Bandung.

Cole was let go in August by the club known as ‘The Blue Prince’ for what they described as ‘failing to perform’. The Englishman made two starts and five appearances in total, failing to find the net.

Southend United manager Phil Brown however has now handed Cole a lifeline to rejuvenate his career by offering him a chance to train with The Shrimps.

“We’ve got Carlton in at the moment after a recommendation from Sam Allardyce and he will train with the first team today,” said Brown.

“He’s returned from Indonesia and we all know what he’s done in his career so we’ll be having a look at him and see where we go from there.”

Cole has played for all of Chelsea, West Ham, Charlton, Celtic and more in his journeyman career, scoring a total of 86 times in just under 400 appearances.
