Former West Ham United defender Danny Gabbidon has jumped to the defence of Arthur Masuaku amidst criticism of the DR Congo international following the Hammers 4-0 defeat to Manchester United, and instead has criticised vice captain Winston Reid for a perceived lack of leadership.

Masuaku has been heavily lambasted for his role in United and Romelu Lukaku’s second goal last Sunday, with the defender appearing to be fiddling with his shin-pads and ‘laughing and joking’ before failing to mark the Belgian striker who subsequently headed home from Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s set piece.

Gabbidon however, believes that it was indeed Winston Reid who was responsible for United doubling their advantage just after half time.

Posting on his official Twitter account, Gabbidon said: “Reid’s the leader in that back line he needs to take charge of it & know Masuaku can’t be trusted to mark a player of the size/strength.”

West Ham take on Southampton tomorrow afternoon as they look to improve on last week’s defeat to Manchester United.
