Slaven Bilic has admitted he ‘expected more’ from his West Ham side of their calamitous 4-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

United dominated the totally one-sided affair from start to finish, opening the scoring 12 minutes before half time after summer signing Romelu Lukaku opened his United account with a fine finish from Marcus Rashford’s through ball.

The big Belgian then doubled the lead shortly after half time, before late goals from Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba completed the 4-0 victory, and Hammers boss Slaven Bilic struggled to hide his disappointment following the defeat.

“I expected more, of course,” Bilic said. “I have to admit it, they were much the better side in every aspect of the game. They were better in the air, they were better on the floor and better in 50-50 challenges.

“We knew they had a strong side, but I expected us to do much better than we did on Sunday.”

The Croatian, who took over as manager of the Hammers back the summer of 2014, stated that United were by far the superior team but despite struggling to find positives from the rout, is already looking ahead of the next game.

“We were much slower than them. They had pace up front and the quality, and we didn’t want to get exposed in one-on-one situations, because in those situations, individually they can make a difference.

“So we wanted to create the situation that we are two against one in our favour, but to be fair we didn’t have that today a lot.

“It’s very hard to find positives when you lose 4-0, but we have to get up and get ready for the next game.”
